About this issue
Why this chart.
The Mandolin Chord Chart documents the standard chord shapes for the 8-string mandolin in standard GDAE tuning. With four pairs of strings (paired in unison), the mandolin is brighter and more percussive than guitar.
Common mandolin chords are surprisingly accessible: most can be played with two-finger shapes in the first four frets. The chart focuses on major, minor, and 7th chords across the most-used keys.
Phase 5 of chords.lol will expand the mandolin catalog substantially. For now, this chart covers the essentials. Bluegrass, country, and folk standards use mostly C, D, G, A, and Em — all on the chart.
How to use it
Each diagram shows two strings at a time (since the strings are paired). Press both strings of a pair at once with the same finger. Start with G, D, and A major — that's bluegrass.
