Highlights octave patterns and note relationships to help you navigate the fretboard faster.
1. Start with Natural Notes
Learn the natural notes (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) first before adding sharps and flats. Focus on one string at a time.
2. Use Octave Patterns
Notes repeat every 12 frets. The 12th fret has the same notes as the open strings, just one octave higher.
3. Learn Landmark Frets
Memorize key positions: 3rd fret (G on low E), 5th fret (A on low E), 7th fret (B on low E), and 12th fret (octave).
4. Practice with Scales
Use scales to reinforce note positions. Start with the C major scale (no sharps or flats) across all strings.

The Musical Alphabet
The musical alphabet consists of 12 notes that repeat in octaves: A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab. Notice there's no sharp/flat between B-C and E-F.
Standard Tuning
In standard tuning, the guitar strings are tuned to E-A-D-G-B-E from lowest (6th) to highest (1st) string. This tuning creates specific interval relationships that make chord shapes and scales consistent across the fretboard.
